HCIS 100C-Health Data Content & Structure
Emphasis on the health information profession, interdisciplinary relationships, health care data management, documentation standards, and methods of access and retention of image-based information.

HCIS 110C-Specialized Health Information Systems
This course covers the maintenance of health information in non-acute care facilities. Procedures for maintaining vital statistics and specialized registries will be included.

HCIS 220C-Statistical Applications in Healthcare Information
Emphasis on acquiring knowledge and skills in data collection methods, health statistics terminology, and computation and presentation of reported health statistics.

HCIS 221C-Healthcare Information Management
Exploration of principles of management, human relations, human resources management, financial management and methods for analyzing and improving systems in the health information management department.

HCIS 222C-Clinical Quality Assessment & Performance Improvement
Study of total quality management, utilization management, risk management and credentialing functions in a health care setting.

HCIS 225C-Legal Issues in Healthcare Information
Advanced course relating concepts and principles of law, the health record as a legal document, confidential communication, consents and authorization, release of information and current trends in health legislation.

HCIS 230C-Computer Applications in Healthcare Information
Exploration of the computerized patient record and information systems life cycle. Abstracting, cancer registry, chart tracking, medical word processing and database management will be emphasized.

HCIS 250C-Clinical Classification Systems
Discussion of various nomenclature and classification systems. Guidelines used to assign codes to diseases and operations in the ICD-9-CM classification system will be emphasized.

HCIS 251C-Reimbursement Methodologies
Application of ICD-9-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding principles to inpatient and outpatient reimbursement systems. Insurance processing, fraud and abuse, and corporate compliance will also be emphasized.

HCIS 290C-Medical Terminology
A course designed to acquaint the student with the specialized language of medicine and to develop communication skills in areas where use of medical terms is necessary and appropriate.

HCIS 291C-Advanced Medical Terminology
Terminology of diseases, operations and treatment modalities.

HCIS 292C-Pharmacology and Laboratory Diagnostics
Study of pharmacology, laboratory tests, and diagnostics as they relate to the management of health information.

HCIS 295C-Seminar and Field Experience
Final course in a series of courses related to health records, latest trends in health care delivery and their effect on health information management and supervision and a final opportunity to practice all the cognitive, psychomotor and affective theory, skill and behavior in an extended field experience. Students will be required to spend 40 hours a week for 5 consecutive weeks in a health care facility under the direction of an RHIT or RHIA.
