Academic Support Division . . .

Purpose:
One of the missions of our college is to serve students who lack adequate preparation for college-level work in one or more areas or who need review because they have been out of school for a number of years. The Academic Support Division offers courses which build the knowledge and skills necessary for academic success. Preparatory courses in English, basic mathematics, beginning algebra and geometry enable students to fulfill pre-college curriculum requirements and prepare students for sequential 100-level courses. Reading improvement, vocabulary development, and college study skills courses build comprehension and methodologies which assist students in all academic areas. Developmental courses provide institutional rather than degree credit.

Although learning assistance is delivered from a physical location at our college, the services offered extend to every area of the curriculum. Under the direction of a professional coordinator, and with the assistance of peer and faculty tutors, the Center provides academic counseling, study skills instruction, and tutorial assistance for introductory classes. The Center is welcoming, nurturing, gathering place for study and instruction and provides for independent study as well as small group discussions and study groups. The Center's goals are to build self-confidence, foster independent learning skills, and promote academic achievement. The Center and its services are available to all students enrolled in community college courses.
